Part of the great thing, some might say the best thing, about being a member of the SJCR, is that you are eligible to come to all the events run by the SJCR Social Events Committee (SEC) and individual societies such as BTC (the Bailey Theatre Company) and JMS (John’s Music Society). The Bar also frequently puts on Events of its own throughout the year.
Some of the biggest events of the year include Bailey Ball (Michaelmas), John’s Day (Easter), Brewfest (Easter), Summer Shakespeare (Easter), Open Mic Nights (all year round) and Summer Ball. They’re a great way to come together as a college community, have fun, share a laugh, and usually discover something you didn’t know about John’s, or the people in it.
Being part of the SJCR means that events are usually heavily subsidised (access to John’s Day 2019 cost just £1!). However, we want all events, including the more costly balls, to be accessible to all, and there are payment schemes in place to help such events be more affordable. If this is something you’d like to find out more about, keep an eye out for emails advertising ball payment schemes, or get in contact with the Social Secretary/SEC Treasurer.
We are also committed to making all events accessible to all with disabilities. If you have a disability that you would like to make the Social Sec aware about, please don’t hesitate to get in contact. We would love to work with you to ensure that you get the best out of all events in college, by making sure there are safe spaces for all in the community.
If you’re thinking about organising an event, please check out these documents to make sure you’re acting in accordance with our stance on accessibility.
